Jinju Carlson

Bassoonist/Reed Maker

Jinju Carlson is a bassoonist and reed maker currently residing in the Washington DC area. Her bassoon studies began in Washington DC, taking lessons with area freelancers and DC orchestra members. Jinju earned her B.M. from James Madison University, where she studied bassoon performance and reed making with Dr. Susan Barber. She continued her studies at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music
and completed her M.M. at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

As of November 2016, Carlson Reed Co. is making its transition to Angry Duck Reeds, LLC, and is now operating out of the Washington DC-Arlington branch of Techshop, located in Crystal City Shops in Arlington, Virginia. With this new and exciting chapter as Angry Duck Reeds, and its association with Techshop, Jinju has the technology and resources to evolve her reed making processes and machinery, as well as develop new and innovative double reed products.

Carlson Reed Co. has been a small self-owned and operated business since 2006, supplying bassoon reeds, cane and supplies to student, amateur and professional bassoonists around the world. Along with using precision machines and tools,
Jinju puts a great amount of time and attention into her reed making to provide reeds and cane of the highest quality.

In addition to making reeds and performing, Jinju enjoys dedicating her time to teaching music, privately and within the Northern Virginia school systems. If you are interested in private bassoon or reed making lessons in the Northern Virginia/Washington DC Metro Area, please contact her at info@angryduckreeds.com.
